Course Overview

This specially designed Parent-Child Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills Course is perfect for beginners. This program offers a supportive and inclusive environment where families can bond while building foundational kayaking skills. Together, you'll discover the joy of paddling, learn essential techniques, and create lasting memories on the water.

What You Will Learn
In this one-day (8 hour) program, you will learn the following:
  • Paddling Techniques: Forward strokes, reverse strokes, bracing, edging, and turning.
  • Safety Skills: Wet exits, self-rescue, and partner-assisted re-entry.
  • Navigation: Basic chart reading, weather conditions, and trip planning.
  • Equipment Knowledge: Choosing the right gear for your kayaking adventures.

At the end of the course, you'll receive a Paddle Canada Basic Skills Certification.

What to Expect

  • Hands-On Learning: You'll practice essential skills in a supportive environment through fun group activities, games, and drills.
  • Get Wet: Be prepared to get in the water—bring a towel and a change of clothes. Avoid cotton clothing, as it is not ideal for kayaking.
  • Safety First: You’ll receive detailed instructions on safety practices and equipment use to ensure a safe, enjoyable learning experience.
  • Rain or Shine: The course runs rain or shine. In case of prolonged thunderstorms, we will reschedule.
  • Make friends: with a group of kayakers who are at a similar stage in their development.

This class is enjoyable and relaxed and provides a positive, inclusive experience. We will incorporate games, group activities, and real-world scenarios as much as possible. You will only be asked to demonstrate in front of the class if you volunteer, and there will be no pressure to speak in front of large crowds unless you choose to do so. If this sounds appealing, along with the promise of some terrible dad jokes, then you've found the right place to sign up!

We want to acknowledge that the land we gather (known as Hamilton) is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabeg.

We are grateful for the knowledge shared with us by the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as Canada as well as the circumpolar region of the Northern Hemisphere.
