
Paddle Canada Level 2 - Moon River

WATERFALLS, SHIPWRECKS AND FISH AND CHIPS
Paddle Canada’s Level 2 is an intermediate kayaking course. This course is for paddlers looking to venture out into the Great Lakes. You will add to the foundational skills learned in Level 1 during this expedition based course.
Moon River is local crown land with easy camping, access to river currents and the most unique navigating challenge in the world. Located in the biggest freshwater archipelago on earth, the 30,000 Islands, there are endless places to explore.
This trip is a 4 day Paddle Canada Level 2 instructional touring adventure.
We will cover the following theory topics:
- Risk Management
- Kayak Navigation and Trip Planning
- Weather forecasting & interpretation
- Tides & Currents

Day 1 - Launch from Woods Bay
Risk management presentation
- Level 1 Review
- Four Corners (turning under momentum) - Level 2 quality
- Sweep strokes
- Bow and cross bow rudder
- High and low brace turns
- Rescues in level 2 conditions
- Self rescue
- Assisted rescue
- Bow Rescue
Day 2 - Fish and Chips
Weather forecasting & interpretation
- Coastal Touring
- Launching and Landing
- Intro to rolling
- Complex towing scenario
Day 3 - Search for Shipwrecks
Navigation presentation
- Daily weather interpretation.
- Ded reckoning day
- We will use charts, plotters and compasses to find shipwrecks and lighthouses.
- Cave extractions
Day 4 - Waterfalls
- Daily weather interpretation.
- Ded reckoning exercises.
- Search for play
- Rock hopping
- Launching and landing in tricky spots
- Tides & Currents presentation at camp
PM – Individual participant feedback, assessments and certification presentations.
For the purposes of this class, you will require: Full List
- A sea kayak, with 2 bulkheads.
- NDK sea kayaks are available for rent
- You will need a pump, a whistle, and a 15m floating rope. They are available to purchase.
- Dry suits are available if required.
- A PFD is mandatory, you must bring your own.
- A paddle.
- Camping gear
- We do not provide food but we will do a trip planning exercise prior to the date of the course.
