aritime Radio Certificate - ROC(M)

The Maritime Radio course covers essential emergency radio procedures as well as everyday operating techniques. Participants will learn about the uses of marine radios, frequency selection, operation, the phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). All mariners, including recreational boaters, can benefit from the many features and capabilities of this advanced form of “automatic” radio. Ensure your safety by securing this important certification, which is mandatory for many Paddle Canada Certificates.

This comprehensive course and exam package will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) with the DSC Endorsement exam. Remember, it is a legal requirement to hold this certificate in order to operate a maritime radio.

Course Outline:

The course will run over two sessions.

In the first session, which lasts three hours (6 - 9 PM), at Kayak Ontario's headquarters. You will learn about VHF radios and marine safety procedures, with opportunities to ask questions and engage in practical exercises.

The second in-person session (10 - 1 PM) allows for review and practice before the exam, which consists of both written and oral components. Although scheduled for three hours, this session often concludes earlier.
