Montreal Surf & Current Clinic

The Montreal Surf & Current Clinic is a challenging and fun next step after Level 2.

Over three days, we’ll build on the foundation of ferrying, eddy turns, and rescues, then take things further with standing waves, surf dynamics, and group progression. It’s our end-of-season capstone — a supportive and social environment where paddlers can push their limits and celebrate the year together.

No prior current experience is required. What you do need is solid sea kayak experience at the Level 2 level (or equivalent) and reliable re-entry skills. We start small, build step by step, and keep the coaching and safety net in place so you can focus on learning and having fun.

Who It’s For

  • Paddlers with Level 2 skills or equivalent coastal experience.
  • Comfortable with reliable re-entry skills (self and assisted).
  • Anyone curious about moving water for the first time, or paddlers building momentum toward Level 3.

The Experience

Day 1
We’ll meet at the launch for a safety talk and warm-up paddle, then start working in a gentle current. Expect ferrying, eddy turns, peel-outs, rescues, and control moves — the foundation you’ll need for the rest of the weekend.

Day 2
We step things up with stronger features and timing, then move on to a standing wave. With full coaching support, you’ll receive your first rides and a group debrief to solidify the learning.

Day 3
More time on the wave. We’ll work on entries, trims, exits, and linking rides, with space to follow your own progression. We conclude with a closing circle and head home.

Why Montreal

Montreal is one of the only places where you can safely surf a standing wave in a sea kayak. Combine that with the city’s culture and the vibe of late-season paddling, and you get the perfect mix: a serious classroom and a memorable gathering to close out your paddling year.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that our courses in Montréal take place on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá꞉ka (Mohawk), a founding nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. This land has long served as a meeting place for many First Nations, including the Algonquin, Huron-Wendat, and others.

This territory is historically covered by the Great Peace of Montréal (1701), an agreement between the French and over thirty First Nations.

We are grateful for the enduring care, knowledge, and stewardship of the Kanien’kehá꞉ka and other Indigenous peoples who continue to hold deep connections to these lands and waters. This acknowledgement, accompanied by action, includes contributions to Indigenous-led organizations that make a lasting impact.
