Course Overview
Paddle Canada Level 3 is an advanced sea kayaking course designed for paddlers preparing for a Level 3 assessment on Lake Superior. This lodge-based program combines skill development, leadership, and seamanship in one of Canada’s most dramatic coastal environments.
Lake Superior Provincial Park offers dense forests, clear lakes, sheer cliffs, pristine beaches, and rich Indigenous history. It’s an ideal setting to refine your technical skills, practice rescues, and build leadership capacity while exploring Canada’s largest freshwater sea.

What You Will Learn
- Risk Management & Leadership: Decision-making, group management, and advanced trip planning.
- Seamanship & Navigation: Reading weather, interpreting charts, and managing tides and currents.
- Boat Control in Conditions: Advanced strokes, surf entries/exits, and rock gardening.
- Rescues & Towing: Rescue clinics, towing scenarios, and leadership during incidents.
- Rolling & Confidence: Build rolling skills and stability in rough water.

Every Kayak Ontario course includes access to your personal online learning dashboard, which provides preparation before the course, structured on-water learning, and ongoing support afterward. You’ll also have the option to add a durable, full-colour Kayak Ontario Course Manual as a lasting reference.

Sample Trip Plan
Subject to change with weather and conditions.
- Day 1 – Arrival and orientation. Risk management, tides & currents workshop. On-water stroke and rescue clinics. Evening video review.
- Day 2 – Weather forecasting. Current clinic. Momentum strokes. Group navigation challenge. Rolling lessons (optional). Evening navigation session.
- Day 3 – Coastal paddle in LSPP. Group navigation, towing scenarios, and leadership challenges. Evening review.
- Day 4 – Rock gardening. Advanced rescue clinic. All-in rescues. Wrap-up, participant reviews, and closing debrief.


What to Expect
- Hands-On Learning: Full days on the water with evening theory sessions.
- Lodge Stay: Comfortable lodge accommodations are included in the course fee.
- Meals: Participants are responsible for meals; lodge kitchen facilities and local dining are available.
- Community: Learn alongside motivated paddlers working toward advanced skills.
- Rain or Shine: Runs in all conditions except prolonged severe weather.
Equipment Needed
- Sea kayak with two bulkheads (rentals available).
- Safety gear: pump, whistle, 15 m floating line.
- Dry suit (available for rent).
- Personal paddling and camping gear as required.
Other Information
- Transportation to Lake Superior Provincial Park is not included.
- Participants are responsible for travel, meals, and personal expenses.
