Guelph Lake has been a gathering point for paddlers in Southwestern Ontario for years. With sheltered bays, winding channels, and long stretches of open water, it’s one of the most accessible reservoirs for practicing foundational sea kayaking skills.
This trip report was originally written in 2016, back when I was much more actively blogging trip reports. We’ve updated it for 2025 to reflect current conditions, access information, and the fact that Guelph Lake is now home to one of our most popular beginner programs.
Exploring the Launch Area
Driving into the conservation area, follow the signs to the small parking lot with the boat ramp. In fall, the reservoir is often drawn down for the season, revealing channels, shorelines, and colours that make this lake a surprisingly beautiful shoulder-season destination.

Difficulty: Guelph Lake is mostly sheltered but large enough that wind can build up chop on exposed sections. The mouth of the Speed River is a narrow funnel and should be approached with awareness of current and boat traffic.

Paddling Toward the Speed River
We spent the afternoon zig-zagging across the lake, heading toward the mouth of the Speed River. Even with low water, the channels were deep enough to explore comfortably, and the views opened up as the shoreline dropped away.

The wildlife was constant — herons, ducks, and more deer than we expected. With calm water and gentle wind, it was an easy 3-hour paddle across the reservoir and back.
Trip Length & Conditions
- Trip length: About 3 hours at a relaxed pace, with lots of detours into side channels.
- Recommended skills: Suitable for paddlers with a solid foundation in boat control and basic safety skills. Most paddlers use Guelph Lake as early-season practice or Level 1 preparation.
Planning Your Own Paddle Here
Guelph Lake is a managed conservation area. Entry fees apply, and the reservoir level varies by season. Updated fees and access details can be found on the Grand River Conservation Authority website.
If you're working toward your first sea kayaking course — or returning to refine your skills — our Level 1 courses now run here throughout the summer and fall.
Why This Trip Still Matters
THis is one of the best spots in the Guelph area to practice skills, get used to small coastal conditions and take courses. The park is busy and full of life. It is a great place to explore.
