Christie Lake Conservation Area offers three distinct paddling trips, ranging from calm water to Class V whitewater. It’s a great destination for paddlers in the Hamilton area.
Trip Rating: 4.0/5
Trip Idea #1: Christie Lake
The lake is a man-made reservoir created by the Christie Dam. On the far side of the dam, spring runoff creates serious whitewater and two massive waterfalls—but that’s a topic for later.
Launch Sites:

Cost: $10 per car.
Difficulty: This is a calm, beginner-friendly lake. Always use proper safety equipment.
Do not launch from the beach.
The best launch site is at the northeast side of the reservoir. It’s easy to accidentally drive to the rental shop, but their rentals are below average and the launch is difficult to access from the parking lot. When you enter the park, turn right and follow the road to the very end. Ignore signs for the kayak rental shop (unless you’re renting). The parking lot there is beside a proper boat ramp.
Trip Idea #2: Upper Spencer Creek

On the far west side of the lake, a small portage leads into Upper Spencer Creek. Depending on water levels, you can paddle through the Christie Wildlife Area all the way to Highway 5—possibly further during high water.
Trip Length: Adding Upper Spencer Creek takes about 45 minutes longer than Trip #1.

Cost: $10 per car.
Difficulty: This section is generally calm, but spring melt and post-storm flows can create stronger currents. Use caution and proper gear.
Trip Idea #3: Class III–V(I) Whitewater
On the east side of the lake, below the dam, is a highly advanced whitewater run. I am absolutely not recommending that anyone paddle it. However, it’s a beautiful hike, and if you see whitewater experts running it, it’s impressive to watch.

Below the dam are cascades, an abandoned mill, and two major waterfalls. You do not want to be anywhere near them in a kayak. For more information, visit liquidlore.com.
